GRAVEL

The story of GRAVEL begins with 1950s New York, European roots and the promise of the American Dream. Founder Michael B. Knudsen emigrated from Scandinavia to the United States and, in 1957, translated his vision of modern masculine fragrance into a distinctly New York creation shaped by both American confidence and European sensibility.

The brand's name comes directly from the small stones of the Hudson River. They became more than a visual symbol: stones are still placed inside the bottles, which continue to be filled by hand, preserving a tangible connection between GRAVEL and its New York origins.

Its olfactory character brings together classic American masculinity and European refinement. Woody, aromatic, spicy, citrus and warmer facets are often handled with restraint, giving the fragrances structure, depth and a gradual evolution rather than relying on excessive intensity.

After Knudsen's death, production stopped for a period and the remaining fragrances became sought-after vintage pieces. Georg and Christian Blessing later revived the house, and since 2018 Christian Blessing has continued its development by preserving Knudsen's principles while working with both established perfumers and younger creative talents.

Contemporary GRAVEL now brings its historical identity into modern haute perfumery. The house works with fine fragrance oils from Grasse, Italy and Switzerland, maintains hand-finished production traditions and has expanded into more concentrated creations. The result is a distinctive meeting of American character, European craftsmanship and an unusually tangible sense of heritage.
