Kilian Hennessy founded the house in 2007 with the ambition of restoring the richness and lasting structure associated with late 19th- and early 20th-century French perfumery while giving it a contemporary, audacious character.

Growing up around his family's centuries-old cognac cellars left a lasting impression on Hennessy's olfactory memory. Oak barrels, wood, sweetness and the distinctive atmosphere created by evaporating alcohol later became recurring sources of inspiration. Travel, art, nightlife, personal encounters and memories further expand the creative world behind the fragrances.

KILIAN places particular emphasis on the lasting architecture of the drydown. Hennessy has described a preference for an older style of perfume construction in which much of the formula is built around enduring materials such as woods, resins, vanilla and balsamic notes. These may be contrasted with white florals, musk, spices, fruits or fresher facets, allowing the collection to move between dark sensuality and more luminous expressions.

Fragrance is also treated as part of personal identity. Hennessy speaks of maintaining a “wardrobe” of scents and choosing among them according to mood, clothing and the personality he wants to project. The Estée Lauder Companies acquired the brand in 2016, while Kilian Hennessy's creative vision has remained central to its identity.
