M·A·C Cosmetics was founded in Toronto in 1984 by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo. Its origins were rooted in practical needs within professional fashion photography and makeup artistry: the founders wanted cosmetics capable of delivering sufficient intensity and definition under studio lighting and in front of a camera. That professional foundation remains central to the brand, which continues to define itself through artistry, color, creativity and inclusion.

M·A·C was also among the beauty brands that embraced drag, queer and alternative cultural communities relatively early, challenging narrow definitions of age, race and gender in beauty. Its charitable initiative established in 1994 became another important pillar, supporting health, equal rights and communities affected by HIV/AIDS.
