The house was founded in 2009 by Francis Kurkdjian and Marc Chaya, bringing together Kurkdjian's creative vision and Chaya's entrepreneurial and aesthetic perspective. Their ambition was to uphold the standards of French fine perfumery while giving them a freer, more contemporary and multifaceted expression.

By the time the Maison was established, Francis Kurkdjian had already spent years exploring fragrance beyond its traditional boundaries. In 2001, he opened a bespoke perfume atelier, followed by artistic collaborations from 2003 and his first olfactory installation at Versailles in 2006. These experiences helped shape his view of scent as an artistic medium capable of engaging with space, memory and emotion, rather than existing only as something worn on the skin.

The house's creative language is marked by precision and contrast. Dry woods and powerful amber-like materials may meet soft musks, luminous florals, citrus freshness, spices or gourmand facets. Kurkdjian works with both natural ingredients and contemporary aroma molecules, using technical expertise not for unnecessary complexity but to achieve clarity, balance, diffusion and a distinctive sensory effect.

This breadth is central to the fragrance-wardrobe philosophy. Rather than suggesting that a person should be defined by a single signature scent, the Maison encourages different compositions for different moods and facets of personality. That freedom is balanced by rigorous French craftsmanship and a preference for purity, sophistication, timelessness and the reinvention of classical codes.

LVMH acquired a majority stake in Maison Francis Kurkdjian in 2017, while Marc Chaya and Francis Kurkdjian continued in their leadership roles. The house has maintained its emphasis on creative freedom and on the belief that the true value of luxury perfume lies primarily in the composition itself rather than excessive decoration. Today, MAISON FRANCIS KURKDJIAN represents a distinctly modern form of French fine perfumery, balancing technical precision, sensuality and artistic expression.
