The Roberto Cavalli universe grew from Florence's culture of art and textiles. Born in Florence in 1940, Cavalli studied at the city's art academy during the late 1950s and became particularly interested in the relationship between painting and fabric. During the 1960s, he established a small textile-printing workshop and experimented with innovative printing techniques on finished garments. His Paris debut in 1970 featured distinctive leather patchwork, while his womenswear was presented at Florence's Sala Bianca in Palazzo Pitti in 1972. These material experiments later developed into animal prints, embellished denim and the overt sensuality that became unmistakably Cavalli.

Roberto Cavalli luxury has always stood in opposition to quiet minimalism.
