S.T. Dupont is a French luxury Maison whose history began in Paris in 1872. Founder Simon Tissot Dupont had worked as a photographer and was connected with the world surrounding Napoleon III before opening his first leather-goods workshop at the age of twenty-five. His made-to-order travel trunks and cases quickly attracted members of Europe's elite. Travel therefore stood at the heart of the early house: durability, meticulous construction, fine materials and personalization were essential from the beginning. Simon's sons Lucien and André took control of the business in 1919, and in 1924 they transferred the workshop to Faverges in Haute-Savoie, a location that remains important to the craft culture of S.T. Dupont.

During the twentieth century, the Maison expanded far beyond leather. It introduced its interpretation of the luxury lighter in 1941, while fine writing instruments later became another defining category. Lacquer work, metal craftsmanship, engraving and highly controlled surface decoration created an unmistakable technical language. As a result, S.T. Dupont objects are often treated not simply as functional accessories but as miniature works of craftsmanship. The house's history also includes notable commissions and associations involving figures such as Audrey Hepburn, Pablo Picasso and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, reinforcing its place within the culture of formal French luxury.

Fragrance was a later extension rather than the original activity of the Maison. Interparfums signed a license to create and distribute S.T. Dupont fragrances worldwide in 1997, with the first releases arriving in 1998. The olfactory direction translated established house codes—metal, lacquer, precision, urban refinement and mature luxury—into scent. S.T. Dupont is therefore most accurately understood first as a historic French maker of leather goods, lighters and writing instruments, with fragrance serving as a later sensory extension of the same lifestyle universe.
