For more than a century, Shiseido has brought Japanese sensitivity together with the traditions and innovations of Western perfumery. Founded in Tokyo’s Ginza district in 1872, the house developed around an early philosophy of combining Eastern culture with modern Western science and aesthetics.

A defining chapter in its fragrance history began in 1917, when Shiseido introduced one of the first authentic perfumes created by Japanese makers. At a time when fragrance in Japan was largely dominated by European imports, the house began exploring the olfactory character of native flowers such as camellia, plum blossom, and wisteria.

This approach gradually became part of Shiseido’s fragrance identity. Rather than simply reproducing the smell of an ingredient, the house sought to express an atmosphere, landscape, or emotional image. Florals have been paired with woods, citrus, musk, spices, and warmer facets, often resulting in compositions that feel refined, clean, and carefully balanced.

Japanese aesthetics also influence the visual presentation of the fragrances. Simplicity, respect for nature, and precise detail often meet contemporary design and references to traditional Japanese art.

Today, Shiseido’s fragrance heritage stretches back more than a hundred years. Japanese cultural sensitivity, modern creativity, and international perfumery expertise continue to shape a refined and distinctive olfactory identity.
