Alessandro Gualtieri is an Italian perfumer known for his avant-garde approach to fragrance creation.
He studied perfumery through a combination of formal education in Germany and informal lessons with an Italian émigré he met in a bar. He built his reputation working with major fashion brands such as Fendi, Versace, Helmut Lang, and Diesel before founding his own fragrance line, Nasomatto, in Amsterdam.
What sets Gualtieri apart is his refusal to disclose the ingredient lists of his fragrances. Instead, he focuses on describing the inspiration behind each scent, allowing the wearer to interpret and experience the fragrance personally over time.
Among his notable creations is Duro, his interpretation of masculinity, designed to amplify expressions of strength. Another iconic fragrance is Black Afgano, inspired by the scent of hashish and known for its smoky, earthy character.
In addition to Nasomatto, Gualtieri founded Orto Parisi, a line that explores the animalistic aspect of human nature. He also co-founded Maria Lux with his wife, Dutch designer Lilian Driessen.
Overall, Gualtieri’s unconventional approach has earned him a devoted following and established him as one of the most daring and creative noses in the fragrance industry.
