Dominique Ropion is a French master perfumer, born in Paris in 1955. He studied at the Roure Bertrand Dupont perfumery school in Grasse to pursue his passion for fragrance. After graduating, he began his career at the Roure Bertrand laboratories, where he met his friend and collaborator Frédéric Malle.
Over the years, Ropion has worked with many renowned brands, including Christian Dior, Thierry Mugler, Lancôme, Givenchy, Issey Miyake, Yves Saint Laurent, Paco Rabanne, and The Body Shop. In 2000, he joined International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), where he continues to create groundbreaking fragrances.
Ropion’s creations are known for their precise balance and impeccable composition. He is a bold perfectionist who takes risks to create true masterpieces. His perfumes are often compared to great architectural works, balancing powerful ingredients with carefully measured delicate accords until the composition stands perfectly on its own.
He has received numerous awards for his contributions to perfumery, including the Prix François Coty in 2008, the Cosmetique Magazine Oscar in 2010, and the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2012. In 2018, he was named a Master Perfumer.
Some of his most famous creations include Givenchy Ysatis, Givenchy Amarige, Kenzo Jungle Elephant, Calvin Klein Euphoria, Thierry Mugler Alien, Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb, and Lancôme La Vie Est Belle. However, his most iconic creation is widely considered to be Portrait of a Lady for Frédéric Malle, developed with his close collaborator. This fragrance is regarded as a masterpiece in modern perfumery.
