Francois Demachy

François Demachy is a renowned French perfumer who has created some of the most iconic fragrances of the modern era. Born in Cannes, he spent much of his life in Grasse, the world capital of perfumery, where his father owned a pharmacy. After studying dentistry and physiotherapy, he joined Mane and later studied perfumery at Charabot.

In 1984, Demachy joined Chanel, where he was appointed Director of Research and Development, while also contributing to fragrances for Chanel, Ungaro, Bourjois, and Tiffany. After 22 years at Chanel, he was appointed Director of Cosmetics and Fragrance Development at LVMH and became the in-house perfumer for Christian Dior in 2006.

At Dior, Demachy created some of the world’s most popular fragrances, including Sauvage, Miss Dior, and Dior Homme. He also worked on fragrances for Fendi and Acqua di Parma, both part of the LVMH group.

In 2009, he created Miss Dior Chérie L’Eau, a sparkling floral fragrance with bitter orange, gardenia, and white musk. In 2011, he oversaw major changes to the Miss Dior line, renaming Miss Dior Original and simplifying Miss Dior Chérie into simply Miss Dior.

Demachy is known for his passion for his craft and draws inspiration from producers as well as the people who wear his fragrances. A passionate traveler, music lover, and admirer of feminine beauty, he constantly seeks to surprise and continues the legacy of Monsieur Dior: “Always do your best and never be satisfied.”

In 2021, he became a central figure in the documentary Nose, which explores the full journey of perfume creation—from raw material cultivation to the final wearer. The film highlights global collaboration and gives recognition to farmers and producers worldwide.
