Loc Dong is a master perfumer with a unique personal history and approach to fragrance creation. As the first Asian fine fragrance perfumer, he has broken barriers and paved the way for future generations. His journey, from fleeing Vietnam at a young age to becoming a master perfumer, is a testament to his resilience and determination.
Born in Saigon, Loc Dong spent his childhood in a remote village where he developed his olfactory vocabulary by helping his grandfather, a local healer. He learned to identify and sort plants by scent to prepare medicines. At the age of eleven, he fled Vietnam alone by boat, eventually reaching Malaysia and later the United States.
Loc Dong's career in the fragrance industry began at Haarman & Reimer in 1992. In 2002, he joined International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), where he worked between Paris and New York for 20 years, rising to the rank of Senior Perfumer. Later, the German company Symrise named him a Master Perfumer in its Fine Fragrance division.
His approach to perfumery is deeply rooted in his early experiences in Vietnam. He considers himself a "survivor" rather than an artist, attributing his success to his resilience. His most popular creations include Calvin Klein Euphoria, Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia, Paco Rabanne Olympea, and Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto. His journey is a remarkable story of perseverance and triumph.
