Ramon Monegal

The name Ramón Monegal does not only represent a niche perfume brand from Barcelona. It is also a symbol of Spanish perfumery, as his family founded the iconic brand Myrurgia in 1916. His family was responsible for creating historic fragrances such as Embrujo de Sevilla, Sospiro de Granada, and Maderas de Oriente. The Monegal family represents a long tradition of perfumery.

Born in 1951 in Barcelona, Ramón Monegal comes from Spain's most prominent family of perfumers—the founders of Myrurgia—who were appointed as suppliers to the Spanish Royal Court. As a fourth-generation "nose," Ramón followed in his family's footsteps and began his training in 1972, focusing on perfecting tinctures of amber, tonka bean, musk, castoreum, civet, and iris. He continued his studies in Geneva under master perfumer Artur Jordi Pey (from Firmenich), in Grasse with Marcel Carles, and in Paris with Pierre Bourdon (from Takasago and Fragrance Resources). Ramón also nurtured his passion for design, architecture, and the conceptualization of science and art by studying architecture at the Barcelona Design Center in 1977.

Ramón Monegal’s first successful fragrance was created for Myrurgia in 1979. He spent decades creating fragrances for other perfume houses until 2007, when he realized his long-held dream of establishing his own brand. In 2009, after 40 years in the perfume industry, Ramón Monegal launched his first collection under his own eponymous brand based in Barcelona. This project allowed him complete creative freedom and a direct connection with the public. Ramón Monegal’s fragrances demonstrate his belief in the importance of artisanal methods and limitless creativity in elevating perfumery to the level of art.

In his atelier, Ramón Monegal blends, macerates, and completely controls the production of his fragrances, focusing on his primary inspiration: literature. He describes his process as "turning words into notes, phrases into accords, and stories into compositions." His love for words is evident in the signature bottle he designed for his perfume house, which resembles an old-fashioned inkwell with a hinged lid.

Ramón Monegal’s creations are imbued with Spanish passion, sunshine, and his family’s history in perfumery. Many of his compositions touch upon his personal history and experiences. For example, Fiesta was launched to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Monegal family in perfumery, and his love for a sun-drenched island inspired him to create the Ibiza collection. Ramón Monegal’s architectural background is also reflected in La Isla Blanca, a tribute to his time as a student and his admiration for the white buildings of Ibiza.
