The Gucci story began in Florence in 1921, when Guccio Gucci opened an artisanal workshop specializing in leather goods and travel luggage. An important source of inspiration came from his earlier work as a porter at London's Savoy hotel. There he observed wealthy international travelers, their luggage, clothing and sophisticated habits. When he returned to Florence, Guccio sought to combine this sense of English refinement with the exceptional leather-working traditions of Tuscany.

Over the following decades, Gucci grew from a family workshop into a global luxury house, continuously developing recognizable codes often connected with travel, equestrian culture and inventive uses of materials. One of Gucci's greatest strengths is its ability to reinterpret its own heritage again and again. Across different creative eras, the house has been aristocratic, sensual, maximalist, eccentric or more restrained without losing its foundation in Italian craftsmanship.
