The fragrance direction took shape in the early 2000s as John Varvatos began translating his fashion universe into scent. The first fragrance arrived in 2004, establishing a style built around darker materials, sensuality and an almost obsessive attention to detail.

Perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux became one of the key creative figures in this story. His collaboration with Varvatos began in 2002, with the designer closely involved in discussing materials, personal preferences and the idea of a subtle “hidden detail.” Leather, woody depth, warm amber-like textures and unexpected spicy or fruity nuances became important elements of the early olfactory language.

Leather has remained one of the strongest links between the fragrances and the wider John Varvatos aesthetic. In the fashion collections, artisanal finishing, dark tones, aged textures and a rebellious musical attitude are recurring themes. In scent, that mood is translated through woods, resins, smoke, spices, musk and warm balsamic materials, creating a sense of relaxed but distinctly masculine sensuality.

The fragrance palette has nevertheless expanded far beyond dark and heavy structures. Over time, brighter citrus, green, marine and aromatic directions have appeared, while craftsmanship and tactile character have remained central. Even the fresher interpretations continue to draw on music, movement and an independent approach to masculine style.
