Alain Alchenberger

Alain Alchenberger is a renowned perfumer and currently serves as the Director of the Givaudan Perfumery School.

Born in Switzerland, he graduated from the Federal Institute of Technology with a degree in chemical engineering. He discovered the world of perfumery by chance while searching for a job after completing his studies and quickly fell in love with the field.

Alain began his career as a trainee perfumer in 1979 and has since gained extensive experience across multiple categories, including fine fragrances, consumer goods such as soaps, fabric softeners, personal care products, and home care items like air fresheners.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with major global companies such as Unilever, Colgate, and Oreo, as well as numerous well-known brands including Davidoff, Versace, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, and Adidas, working in more than 10 countries across three continents.

Alain believes that passion and patience have been the key factors in overcoming the many challenges he has faced. He also notes that perfumery has evolved over time, much like a life cycle:
in the 1980s, fragrances were bold and intense;
in the 1990s, they became lighter and cleaner;
and in the 2000s, fruity notes gained significant popularity.

He emphasizes the importance of chemistry in modern perfumery, as many contemporary formulas are based on synthetic ingredients. In the past, most ingredients used in perfumery were natural and often of animal origin.

Alain also highlights the challenges of globalization in perfumery, noting that consumer preferences vary greatly by region. For example, tastes in the Far East differ significantly from those in Europe. He also underlines the historical importance of France in shaping the perfume industry, with leading companies such as Guerlain, Coty, L'Oréal, and fashion houses like LVMH, Chanel, and Hermès dominating the industry today.

Speaking about leading one of the most prestigious perfumery schools, Alain says it is прежде всего about giving back and sharing knowledge. With over 11 years of experience in fine fragrances alone, he believes that the key to success in a creative profession is to believe in yourself and follow your own path.

For Alain, the sense of smell is the most important of all senses—it awakens curiosity and connects deeply with emotions and memories through olfactory imagery. If perfumery had to be described in one word, for him it would be LOVE.
