Jean-Christophe Hérault is a senior perfumer at International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) in the Paris office. He grew up close to the fragrance industry, but discovered his true passion for scents as a teenager when he received a bottle of Joop for Men as a gift. He studied chemistry at university and completed an internship in a laboratory in Grasse, where he developed a deep love for perfumery.
During this time, he met legendary perfumer Pierre Bourdon and asked him to become his mentor. Bourdon agreed, on the condition that Hérault broaden his cultural perspective, including literature, cooking, and visual arts.
His early creations include Canali Men EDT (2005), Grès My Dream Hommage à Marlene Dietrich EDP (2008), and Canali dal 1934 EDP (2009), where he worked with an pineapple note that he later refined in Creed Aventus. Other notable fragrances include Balenciaga Florabotanica, Comme des Garçons Amazingreen, Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Extreme, Paco Rabanne Lady Million Empire, and Dolce & Gabbana The One For Men Intense.
He credits Pierre Bourdon with shaping his artistic sensibility and encouraging his creativity. His style is described as provocative and passionate, focusing on emotionally resonant ingredients. He is particularly drawn to smoky and leathery notes reminiscent of open fire.
He has also worked with artificial intelligence tools in fragrance development, acknowledging their usefulness in offering new perspectives, but insists that true creation requires human intuition.
He is best known as the creator of Creed Aventus (2010), which became a global phenomenon, though his work extends far beyond a single fragrance.
