In HERMÈS perfumery, material tends to matter more than spectacle. Leather, woods, spices, flowers, citrus and impressions of nature are approached with the same attention to craftsmanship that defines the wider house. Its fragrance story began in 1951, when Edmond Roudnitska created the first Hermès perfume, drawing inspiration in part from the lingering scent inside one of the house's leather bags.

From the outset, fragrance has been treated as both craft and art. Exceptional materials, precision and storytelling are central, while unnecessary heaviness is generally avoided. Travel, equestrian heritage, leather, landscapes and encounters with different cultures have repeatedly provided starting points for the house's olfactory imagination.

In 2004, Jean-Claude Ellena became Hermès' first exclusive in-house perfumer and developed an especially transparent, restrained and precise style. His approach often relied on a limited number of carefully chosen elements, producing compositions that felt airy and evocative rather than densely constructed.

Christine Nagel joined Hermès in 2014 and became its sole creative perfumer in 2016. Her work is particularly interested in contrast: discipline against warmth, delicate materials against unexpected accents, and craftsmanship against a more instinctive sensuality. This has allowed the fragrance heritage of Hermès to evolve with greater texture and contemporary boldness while retaining its characteristic precision.

The fragrance world of HERMÈS is defined by quiet confidence and balance. It may move through citrus freshness, aromatic greens, florals, woods, leather or spices, yet the underlying philosophy remains consistent: fine materials, a clear idea and disciplined composition. Perfume becomes a personal story and a form of sensory travel rather than simply a finishing accessory.
